Ahmedabad's Dental College HoD Caught Taking Bribe
AHMEDABAD: 22 Aug 2015
A team of state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) trapped a head of department at Government Dental College and Hospital on Civil Hospital campus on Thursday.

Investigators said that the complainants, three Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) students, had shelled out Rs 20,000 each to pay to the accused so as not to face harassment.

According to ACB officials, an MDS student had approached the bureau with complaint against Babu S Parmar, professor and head of department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Parmar was not only the head but also guide for their masters course project.

"As per the complaint, Parmar used to get the students do his personal work, get them pay his various bills including phone and fuel and also used to get snacks and meals on their expenses. They used to comply as Parmar's displeasure could hamper their marks or result into delay in practical work assignments and assessment. However, the demands reached a new height recently when seniors told the three students that the professor wanted a high-end smartphone for his birthday on August 24," said an ACB official.

When the students showed inability to purchase the phone, they decided to give money instead. It was at this stage that they informed ACB. A team of ACB led by inspector R N Patel accompanied students when they handed over Rs 20,000 each at Parmar's chamber in the college on Thursday afternoon.

"Further questioning is on in the case. It is possible that other students might also come forward to register complaint. We have also approached the college authorities to ascertain whether they knew about the practice," said Patel.

HC Raps Govt For Teacher Shortage In Technical Edu
AHMEDABAD: 1 Aug 2015
The Gujarat high court on Friday pulled up the state government once again for not coming up with a concrete plan to recruit teachers for 80% vacant posts in government engineering, polytechnic and pharmacy colleges.

The HC had sought details of action taken to start recruitment process by Friday. But when the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) failed to do so, the bench headed by Justice M R Shah termed it "unfortunate" and commented that the authorities do not have intention to fill vacant posts.

Asking the principal secretary to file an affidavit by Monday, the HC came down heavily on officials for their lethargy, "We are not a government department. Don't take any matter lightly. Do you want the students to suffer?" The court also took up the issue of GPSC, which too is functioning with staff shortage. 50% of total 300 posts in the recruiting agency is vacant. "It is not shocking that the technical education institutes are run on ad hoc basis and GPSC functions on staff on deputation. The government does not seem serious and sincere, though everything should be taken seriously in the field of education," the judges remarked. The HC has ordered to expedite the recruitment process after it was revealed that in engineering, pharmacy and polytechnic colleges there are 5,339 sanctioned posts of principals, head of departments, professors, lecturers etc.

In Juhapura, local residents paid tributes to Kalam.

The Gujarat High Court Advocates' Association observed a two-minute silence in the afternoon on the HC campus.
